Bill Obriens Coaching History From Penn State To The Boston College Eagles

Bill O'Brien's Coaching History: From Penn State to the Boston College Eagles

O'Brien's Early Coaching Career

Bill O'Brien began his coaching career as an offensive coordinator for Maryland in 2005. He spent two seasons with the Terrapins before moving on to Georgia Tech in 2007.

At Georgia Tech, O'Brien helped develop future NFL quarterback Matt Ryan and led the Yellow Jackets to an ACC Championship and an Orange Bowl victory in 2009.

Success at Penn State

In 2012, O'Brien was hired as the head coach at Penn State following the departure of Joe Paterno. In his first season, he led the Nittany Lions to a 7-5 record despite NCAA sanctions that limited their postseason eligibility.

O'Brien's second season at Penn State was even more successful, as the team finished 12-1 and won the Big Ten Championship. He was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year for his efforts.

Stint with the Texans

After the 2013 season, O'Brien left Penn State to become the head coach of the Houston Texans. He spent four seasons with the Texans, leading them to a 24-25 record and one playoff appearance.

O'Brien was fired by the Texans after the 2019 season following a 4-12 record.

Assistant Coach in Alabama and New England

Following his departure from the Texans, O'Brien joined the Alabama Crimson Tide as their offensive coordinator in 2021. He helped Alabama win the National Championship that season.

In 2022, O'Brien joined the New England Patriots as their offensive coordinator. He was fired after just one season, following a disappointing 8-9 campaign.

Return to College Coaching at Boston College

In December 2022, O'Brien was hired as the head coach at Boston College. He is tasked with rebuilding a program that has struggled in recent years.
